And for my next n=1 experiment: 60 half marathons

And for my next n=1 experiment: 60 half marathons before 60. Five a year over this next 12-year celestial cycle that begins with the Year of the Fire Horse. I completed no. 2 on Sunday at the Venice Beach Half Marathon (or no. 1, if you don’t count the Pasadena HM I did in January since it was technically before CNY).
Sunday was fun: flat course, cool people, good vibes, and a harvest of bananas at the finish. I PR’d with a chip time of 1:56 (technically only my second, so the bar was on the floor), and I know I could’ve done better. I uploaded my Strava/Whoop stats to my LLM fitness coach and it was like, your avg heart rate was 150—what the heck were you doing?? Not racing. (I told it I respond well to tough love.)
Truth is, I didn’t train right for this one. “Life got in the way” one too many times and I lost my discipline. I didn’t get to do a single long run for this, just lots of 4-5 mile treadmill workouts. My legs and hips started to file complaints around mile 8. I also did a CF workout 72 hrs before, which was totally against the plan of no max-effort workouts the week of the race. Had a crisis at work that derailed me and I just defaulted to my stress comfort food—some good old-fashioned CF. I went into the race still sore so the back half of the race was torturous. But I kept going and managed to sprint to the finish.

Mid 40s, Korean man. Very light-hearted always trying to joke or make serious things seem lesser. Even in stressful situations, he is the one cracking a joke even if it’s not appropriate. He also is the type to always see the good in people. He believes that for all one’s fault, one can still change at any time that one wishes. He's so focused on his work and business that sometimes he overlooks the things in front of him even though he has the best intentions.

I survived my first 12-hour, overnight (10pm-10am)

I survived my first 12-hour, overnight (10pm-10am), 20+ mile @goruck Tough event, the 9/11 Memorial. It was the most brutal (yet rewarding) experience I’ve endured to date. Thoughts of quitting nagged at me hard at the coldest point of the night when we were all soaked to the bone (after a 1 hr HIIT workout on the big oval lawn at Battery Park with sprinklers dousing us the whole time), shivering uncontrollably standing on the makeshift beach on the Gansevoort Peninsula (Westside Hwy). The bitter cold intensified the pain in my feet, right knee, and lower back. I’ve never been that cold for that long. I joined a group huddle with strangers to protect ourselves from the cutting wind and to trap body heat. 2-3 am was absolute misery. Then they made me team leader for a few hours and I had no choice but to show up, lead a workout, and get all 57 of us from 12th St to 43rd St in tight formation, smartly. That refreshed my spirit and helped me get through the worst of it. Rucking weights were essentially 30 lb for men and 20 lb for ladies. But as a team, we had a bunch of heavy shit to carry like sandbags, weights, kettlebells, etc; I was rucking with 75+ lbs almost half the time. Had to keep telling myself: keep going, just put one foot in front of the other, never quit ever... Then with the sunrise, it finally felt like we were in the home stretch. 2500+ calories later, @cadre_cleve and company reminded all of us again that we sacrificed our comfort to honor the fallen from 9/11.

Between all the actors training, x-fit/bodybuilding/conditioning/rucking, the Spartan 10k Super, soul-searching/vacationing in Okinawa/Seoul, and finally winning the 72 Hr Shootout (@asamfilmlab ), the universe, my greatest teacher, has blessed me. Coming to you live from the Madison, WI, as I’m volunteering for my 4th @crossfitgames . This time, I finally made it onto the Media/Documentary Team where we produce the Miles to Madison series and the CrossFit documentaries. As a CrossFit-obsessed filmmaker, I’ve been trying to get on this team for five years and now I’m finally here. I can say that I’ve definitely paid my dues so getting this position was especially sweet. If you’ve never volunteered before, it’s an incredibly rewarding experience!
